Emerging Technologies North

A 501(C)(3) Providing Education to the Upper Midwest Emerging Technology Community.

Our Story

How We Got Here

Back in 2015 we saw a need for a new kind of technology group. One that was specifically focused on an emerging technology at the time called the "Internet of Things" ( IoT ).

We went to work forming our non-profit, and setting our sites on building a unique community that was a bridge between makers, entrepreneurs and engineers with those of investors and executives. The result was the largest IoT community in the United States, IoT Fuse. We hosted conferences, monthly meetups and hackathons that served thousands of people in Minnesota and beyond.

On January 1st, 2020, we took the organization to the next level and began focusing on all emerging technologies and rebranded ourselves as Emerging Technology North.

"Go Big or Go Home" is what we believe in and are thrilled that you are interested in what we have to offer! We will be continuing to serve those of all ages in the community who are interested in plugging into those who are working in the exciting field of Emerging Technologies.

AI Chronicles: Transformative Talks from 2024

Hey everyone, Justin Grammens here, welcoming you to another episode of Conversations on Applied AI. Today’s episode is especially cool because I used an AI Tool called, NotebookLM (https://notebooklm.google/) to help generate! How amazing is that? We’re diving deep into some of the most engaging conversations of the past year, touching on groundbreaking advancements and thought-provoking insights from some incredible guests. 1. John Stanton from Accord discusses how AI is enabling people with disabilities to access social services more effectively by simplifying complex information and implementing AI-based scoring systems for social determinants of health. 2. Kevin Liu, Associate Professor at Ohio State University, explores the nuances of federated and decentralized learning, highlighting their importance in contexts like autonomous driving and low-power device optimization. 3. Lori Ryan, founder of Lorignite.com, emphasizes demystifying AI for the masses and underscores AI’s role in augmenting human capabilities, turning meeting transcripts into training documentation, and making AI accessible to all. 4. Rajeev Bukralia, Professor at Minnesota State Mankato, breaks down the critical importance of explainable AI (XAI) and data quality, advocating for CIOs to invest in robust data management to fully unleash AI's capabilities. 5. Tim Bornhold shares practical applications of AI in software development and healthcare, advocating for the democratization of software development and emphasizing the power of prompt engineering. The episode then wraps up with reflections on the rapid evolution of AI, its potential to solve significant global challenges, and the importance of responsible AI development. Listeners are encouraged to stay curious, engage, and explore how AI can be integrated into their personal and professional lives. Join us as we journey through the cutting-edge innovations and ethical considerations in AI, and discover how you can be a part of this revolutionary wave. Huge thanks to our sponsors, Lab651 (https://lab651.com) and Recursive Awesome (https://recursiveawesome.com) for supporting the Applied AI (https://appliedai.mn) community! Enjoy! Łukasz Borzęcki - AI for Business and Development: Practical Tools and Strategies

The conversation this week is with Lukasz Borzecki (https://www.linkedin.com/in/%C5%82ukasz-borz%C4%99cki-18b6ba20/) , the CEO of VM Software House, a company specializing in bespoke IT project implementation using a nearshoring model for the central European countries of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Lucas has a background that combines both sales and IT, starting with selling ERP software before transitioning to development, and eventually management. He emphasizes the importance of understanding business language for developers, as well as the need to move beyond just writing code. He also believes that AI developers will replace those who don't. Lucas is also a husband and father of three and enjoys playing the guitar and the accordion and hiking in the mountains. Lucas's unique perspective is that AI is a tool that helps with productivity, reduces busy work, and allows for more strategic thinking. He believes that AI is constantly evolving. However, he also stresses the importance of human involvement and decision-making, especially in areas governed by laws such as the EU's AI Act. When he's not working, Lucas enjoys playing the guitar and accordion and even uses his accordion skills to create a unique and positive work environment by playing "Happy Birthday" for employees on their birthdays. Satish Movva - Transforming Eldercare with Artificial Intelligence

The conversation this week is with Satish Muvva (https://www.linkedin.com/in/satishmovva/) . Satish has founded two companies, both harnessing cutting edge technology and focusing on health. His latest company, CarePredict, has a simple goal, making it easier to take care of and look out for seniors. He's invented a wearable device called Tempo, the first designed for the elderly, which lends our activities of daily living and compiles these patterns into an individual's rhythm journal. Prior to CarePredict, he founded ContinuLink, an innovative home care medical staffing and hospice IT SaaS company, which he sold to Pecura in 2011. Geometric Deep Learning for Product Design // Applied AI Meetup August 2024

This event is sponsored by Recursive Awesome (AI Strategy) & Lab651 (Custom AI Software Development) This month, we'll be diving into using Geometric Deep Learning in Product Design with Fatma Koçer-Poyraz! Physics-based simulations have been used successfully to speed up product design. These simulations predict the NVH, durability, aerodynamics, and electromagnetics performance of products among others. However, these simulations require lengthy model preparation and lengthy computations on expensive hardware. Hence design exploration that is required in concept design phases is not as accessible, leaving engineers with few design choices with trial-and-error to pursue rather than finding innovative, optimal designs that can be found through design exploration. One of the long-asked questions have been whether historical simulation data can be used to train machine learning models to be used for fast design exploration. However, this data is most likely not parametric, neither parametrizable. This is the challenge geometric deep learning solves. With geometric deep learning, we no longer need parametric or parametrizable datasets to train ML models. In this presentation, applications of geometric deep learning will be shown along with how it is productized in Altair physicsAI. Our speaker this month is Fatma Koçer-Poyraz, who has received a B.Sc. degree in Civil Engineering from the Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey, and MSc and PhD degrees from the University of Iowa in Structural Optimization. After graduation, she joined Visteon to develop processes for design optimization of structural and electromagnetic parts. In 2006, she started in Altair as Product Line Manager for Altair HyperWorks design exploration and optimization products. Currently she works as the Vice President for Engineering Data Science. In this role, she and her team work on engineering data science strategy, development, and execution which includes investigating and applying the latest technologies in the field, providing feedback to Altair software, and supporting customer projects. Fatma Kocer-Poyraz is one of the recipients of Crain’s 2019 Notable Women in STEM recognition. She is also the Vice-Chair for NAFEMS Engineering Data Science Working Group since 2021.

Nick Roseth - Human Factors Psychology Applied to Artificial Intelligence

The conversation this week is with Nick Roseth (https://www.linkedin.com/in/nickroseth/) . Nick is a visionary technologist positioned at the nexus of business technology and design. His 25 year career spans startups and Fortune 500 companies, where he has driven innovation and sustainable success. Nick leads efforts to harness emerging technologies such as spatial computing, which encompasses augmented and virtual reality, artificial intelligence, hardware, and SaaS. His work cuts across diverse industries, including healthcare, finance, and construction. And I would be remiss if I didn't mention that Nick is an influential public speaker and a staunch advocate for emerging technologies. He's done a TEDx talk on bringing tech jobs to rural America and was the creator of DocuMNtary, a forum exploring tech entrepreneurship in Minnesota. And if that wasn't enough, he's the chapter president of VR/AR Minneapolis as he continues to champion the integration of technology in community development.
